Is it OK for the Invisalign tray to not fit for the first time?

One of our readers got to this project by using the following search: “is it ok for the invisalign to not fit for the first time”. I think it’s a good idea to try and explain some of the issues.
Invisalign is made of a series of trays that go on your teeth. They are made of plastic and are created by using your initial moulds and a 3D computer system to create all the steps till your teeth will be perfectly aligned. Click on this link to find out how Invisalign is made.
Since there is some time between the moulds and the moment you get your Invisalign it is possible for the trays to be a bit “tight”. I think this would best describe the feeling you have when putting the first aligner on or when changing with the next set. They are “tight”.
The entire system relies on the fact your teeth need to move to a desired direction. In order to achieve this, each aligner should push or rotate the tooth and it needs to not be a perfect fit for the current situation, but to force the tooth some more.
After wearing your trays for some time, you’ll notice the current set fits nicely. At the end of the 2 weeks / set you’ll be able to take out the trays very fast. The next set will be a bit tricky to put and after few days it’s getting easier again. By doing this, each set gets your teeth moving to the desired situation.
Getting back to the question at hand. It’s normal for the first aligner to not fit perfectly or appear to not be able to be put on your teeth. Normally your orthodontist is the one to put it in place, so he/she’ll be able to see if there are any issues. There shouldn’t be anything serious, just the fact it’s gotta be “tight”, as I mentioned before.
So, I don’t think you need to worry too much. The guys at Align Technologies do a good job and if your ortho made good impressions for your teeth, it will be just fine. No matter what might arise, your doctor is there to help you with the first set and he/she’ll solve any issues that might arise.
After you get back home you’ll notice it’s hard to take your aligners out and put them on again, but it’s a matter of hours/days. After few take out / put back moves they’ll be easy to manage.

Your answer is right on point. Patients with invisalign should also remember to visit their dentist every month to monitor their treatment.

The tray does indeed not fit perfectly the first time. You have to remember that the goal of the treatment is to realign your teeth. Keep consistent and things will be fine.

Wow…that is good information for me to know.
I did not know that the Invisalign tray doesn’t fit perfectly during your initial use.
I am learning a lot from this blog. This blog is definitely helping me make a clearer decision on whether I should get Invisalign for my own teeth.

I think when we put invisalign tray for the first time it will not fit for the current situation but latter on after each aligner push or rotate the tooth you will came to know the current set fits well. After wearing for weeks, you will be able to take out easily. When we keep on changing the set repeatedly, each set get your teeth moving to the desired situation.
Getting back to the question, I agree to the answer given, the orthodontist will solve any issues and there shouldn’t be anything serious other than the tightness. The tightness is just for a few hours later on it will be easy to manage.

Yes, it’s ok that the invisalign tray doesn’t fit for the first time. When we put invisalign tray it will be a bit tight for the first time but latter on after each aligner will rotate and force the tooth to fit well. After some weeks we will came to know that the set fits nicely and after 2 to 3 weeks you will be able to take out easily. When we change the set repeatedly our teeth will be moving to the desired situation.
The orthodontist will solve any issues which arise during the treatment and there shouldn’t be anything serious other than the tightness. The tightness is just for a few hours in order to make the teeth in a perfect place, later on it will be easy to manage.

I know some people who have used Invisalign tray teeth whitening system and are satisfied with its result, but they are never thrilled with the inconveniences associated with invisalign and other tray whitening systems. Equally effective are the easy to use teeth whitening products, which are the pen, shaped gel whitening systems that most people are using these days, and as a result they are taking market shares away from the strips and tray systems.

I must agree to you both, patients with invisalign should visit their dentist every month and the tray will not perfectly fit the first time.

HI. my invisalign trays do not seem to fit right either. The plastic on the top tray does not go all the way up to the top of the teeth to meet the gums. Thus the tray is constantly filling with saliva and it is impossible to say any word that contains an ’s’. This also makes them much less invisible:/ any advice?

What kind of gels do I need to use? I’ve read that there are many differnt products and % of carbamide peroxide. What should I use? any reccomendations?

Like my braces when I was younger, overtime the goal is to continually move the teeth in one direction…
My wife has recently been considering the invisalign option, since her teeth have shifted out of alignment with age. It’s helpful to have a better understanding to the issues she may face should she go with that option.

I also think you are right, because if patient do not visit their dentist any month they will find themselves in the same situation of pains when the time comes so it is primordial for all these patients to meet their dentist every month.
