Nobody obeys the Doctor. But if you pick a good orthodontist, he will be prepared for the fact that you might chew gum, eat candy, etc. And wearing that retainer - at some point it begins to drive you crazy.

I agree, that you learn to brush like a banchee - it is the only way to keep the teeth clean.

I agree with Zoso on the communication bit and it is very important for individuals to be comfortable with the diagnosis and the treatment plans. One way is to ask how you might look like after the treatment and how much commitment is required during the procedure.

Also, you need to explore and be informed about the new treatment methods in the industry. If you don't mind the costs, there are many better and less painful options available! It might be all worthwhile in the end...

A lot of great advice here. Definitely don't choose your ortho on price alone (and the most expensive is not necessarily the best either).

I'll add three more golden rules: Communication, communication, and communication. Make sure you communicate with your orthodontist up front what are your goals for treatment, and make sure that he communicates with you just what sort of results to expect. Then make sure to maintain an ongoing dialogue throughout treatment. If you go into treatment expecting more than is possible, then you are bound to come out at the end feeling it was a failure.

The only point where I really disagree with you is on hard food. Everyone is different, and I was perfectly able to manage my normal diet. I'd not advise chewing ice, or biting rocks, but then that's a bad idea whether you're in orthodontic treatment or not.

I agree, the biggest thing to making all the time, effort, and money worth it is going to be brushing while you are getting treatment, and your retainers when the treatment is done.

I see patients who don't brush, and once the braces are removed, have cavities in all the areas that were covered.

The other thing I see often is adults coming back in for braces again, because they didn't wear their retainers when they were teens.

Preventative maintenence is the best.
